Lake Michigan’s unsalted waters beckon visitors to Ludington every summer. It’s one of the appeals of this small, coastal town. But why not try something new this year? Wander past the swim buoys and get your feet wet with one of our Top 5 adventures.
1. Charter a fishing excursion
Ludington hosts one of the largest salmon fishing tournaments on the Great Lakes every July - but if competition isn’t your thing - try a charter to help you reel in a prized salmon or trout off the coast. This is a great family activity, and there’s nothing better than taking in a sunrise from a boat on Lake Michigan.
If you are a kayaker, you won’t want to miss the Sable Points Water Trail: 35 miles of shoreline paddling from Ludington to Silver Lake State Park in Oceana County. You will enjoy peaceful, sand-dune scenery and be able to navigate and explore six adjacent rivers and streams. SUP boarding has also become popular, which allows you to enjoy the lake from a new perspective by standing on it. On a calm day, you can venture out on Lake Michigan for a novel way to get to a beach or dune. To rent a kayak or SUP board, visit one of Pure Ludington’s outfitters. The Pere Marquette River is another waterway known for canoeing and kayaking in the area.

3. Cross Lake Michigan on the S.S. Badger
Take a step back in history and sail aboard this National Historic Landmark. A four-hour journey on the Badger takes you across Lake Michigan to Manitowoc, WI. Aboard the ship, there are many activities for your family to enjoy: dining, movies, Badger Bingo or simply chilling out on the ship’s bow. For an exciting twist, check out the Badger’s shoreline cruises. Dress like a pirate for a themed excursion (July 22), enjoy a cocktail and kick up your heels.
4. Play at the Beach
Spend a day outdoors at a sugar-sand beach, swim in the fresh lake, play frisbee, engage in a game of volleyball or just relax in the sun. Stearns Park Beach has a skate park, mini golf, handicapped accessible walkways and concessions at the water’s edge. The Ludington State Park Beach also has a concession stand and bathhouse.
5. Set Sail
Charter a sailboat for a Lake Michigan experience you won’t soon forget. Freedom Sailing Adventures offers 2 ½-hour cruises, half-day, full-day and sunset cruises on the big lake from June 1 through September 30.
No matter which summer activities you choose to explore, we think you will enjoy the fresh waters, beautiful scenery, sandy beaches and fisheries. Lake Michigan adventures are sure to please all ages and abilities, so make plans now to visit Pure Ludington!
