Miles of Trails Welcome Snowshoers

Snowshoeing is a great way to get outdoors in the winter months and a spectacular way to get a glimpse of Pure Ludington scenery. The Ludington State Park boasts of 5,300 acres of land - and while you probably won’t see all of them - the ski and snowshoe trails winding through the property display the beauty of the snow-dusted trees, a rippling river and nearby lake.

The state park offers a number of snowshoeing events in January for locals and guests alike - all free of charge. Dress in layers and meet at the warming shelter near the entrance to the park. Feel free to explore with your own snowshoes, or borrow a pair from the park. Sixty pairs are freely available for use, on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you’re new to the activity, you may want to try a guided tour; a park

ranger will take you through the dunes and forests to scout the property. If it’s an evening event, you should plan to bring a flashlight or headlamp, or take a look at the lantern-lit snowshoe hikes, specially planned for January and February. Seventy-five lanterns will light a one-mile loop through the park, where hikers can travel to find one of two bonfires along the route. Take a break, warm up by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy conversation with family and friends. This activity is self-paced and a first-rate means to take in the sights and sounds of the evening. Of course, cross-country skiiers and hikers are invited to participate in the events as well.

Participants will leave with a certificate of completion, a knowledge of snowshoe history and, of course, their own set of snowshoes. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged; the class will fill up quickly.
