The Manistee National Forest encompasses 481,000 acres of woods, streams and lakes along the Lake Michigan shoreline and offers year-round recreation for many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, off-road vehicle use, biking, driving for pleasure, camping, hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling, river use, and gathering--berry picking, mushrooming. Manistee is the name of a Chippewa Indian God and means "Spirit of the Woods".
Diverse recreational opportunities across the Forest ranges from the tranquil solitude found in the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area to the more developed settings found at the Lake Michigan Recreation Area.The Forest also contains legendary high quality, cold water river systems of national significance. The Manistee, Bear Creek, Pere Marquette, and Pine Wild and Scenic Rivers and tributaries provide a nationally recognized network of premier "blue ribbon" fishing opportunities. Each spring and fall thousands of steelhead and salmon migrate to the Forests' streams and rivers, making the Forests one of the most popular fishing destinations in the State of Michigan. The Manistee National Forest is recognized as the premier forest for river watercraft use and among outfitters and guides.
