Remember that vacation you took years ago with your family when you were just a kid? Mom and Dad waking you up at the crack of dawn, piling into the back of the car with your brothers and sisters, the excitement, the anticipation. And then, at long last, you arrived at the beach.

Everyone’s memories are different and unique. Maybe you spent the day playing on shore, building sandcastles and burying dad in a pile of sand. Or maybe you preferred the water, riding the waves into shore only to run back out to catch the next ride in. However you remember it, all of us have those vivid images of vacations past etched into our memory that we will never forget.

Ludington

Ludington’s unique historic tradition is just another aspect of our community that separates us from other vacation destinations. Dating all the way back to the 17th century, Ludington is where the celebrated French explorer Father Jacques Marquette ended his expeditions and was buried. You can still visit the site where he is said to have been buried, where a monument stands commemorating his life. Through the centuries, with the rise of the lumber industry, Ludington became an epicenter for the booming logging industry in Michigan. At the same time, the area became a prominent hub of shipping and transportation in the Northern United States, boasting the largest car ferries fleet in the country. The remnants of this rich history can still be seen in modern Ludington by taking a ride on the SS Badger car ferry or by spending a day in historic White Pine Village.

Ever since people settled in Mason County centuries ago, agriculture has played a decisive role in our area’s history. This is a history that our residents are proud of and continue to honor to this day. As you explore the back roads of Mason County, feel free to admire the pastoral beauty that our community continues to preserve.
